IRDA issues guidelines to standardize health insurance

IRDA issued guidelines for all CEOs of Life Insurers, Non-Life Insurers, Standalone Health Insurers and TPAs to standardize health insurance in India which will be effective from 1st July 2013 for group products and 1^st October 2013 for other products. The guideline contains definitions of 46 terms that are commonly used in health insurance policies.

The Regulator also standardized 11 terms used in critical illness to resolve the differences in the definitions of terms on Critical Illnesses adopted by the different insurers which are creating confusion in the minds of consumers and the industry.

Authority also standardized the following-

• Pr-authorization and Claim form.
• List of Excluded Expenses in Hospitalization Indemnity policies.
• File and Use Application Form, Customer Information Sheet and Database Sheet.
• Agreement between TPA & Insurer and Provider (Hospital) & Insurer.

New Guidelines By IRDA To Sell Health Insurance by Life Insurance Agents

Insurance Regulatory Development and Authority permitted agents of general insurance companies to sell mediclaim products of standalone health insurance companies. To encourage penetration of health insurance in Country, it has been decided by IRDA to allow Standalone health insurance companies to avail the services of agents of other life or non-life insurance companies to sell their insurance products.

In General, life insurance agents cannot sell health insurance product, for this they have to clear two different certification programs. But now agent who wants to sell both the insurance products would have to clear only life insurance certification.
Standalone health insurers have to provide training session of at least 25 hours in order to make them familiar with the health insurance concepts.

It is also clearly mentioned in the guidelines that no agent of life or non-life segment would be allowed to sell products of more than one standalone health insurer.
